BREWER AND GOBI ANNOUNCE LITERACY GRANT
FOR NARRAGANSETT REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Boston – Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) and Representative Anne M. Gobi (D-Spencer) today announced that the Narragansett Regional School District will receive $20,000 from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE).

The grant award will fund a partnership between Narragansett and Tufts University to focus on reading comprehension instruction for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. The literacy grant program, administered by ESE, supports professional development partnerships to increase the number of proficient readers in high need districts.

“I applaud Superintendent Weiss and the staff at Narragansett for working to secure this grant,” said Senator Brewer. “Through this partnership, teachers will be given the tools to enhance reading comprehension skills. I am pleased that ESE recognized the need for this important training.”

“I know that the students will benefit from the grant and it will help them to enjoy a lifetime of reading,” stated Representative Gobi.

The Legislature appropriated $4,175,489 for a competitive literacy and early literacy grant program in the Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10) Budget. Over $3.3 million was awarded by ESE in grant awards.
