BREWER ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR DISTRICT FROM STUDENT AWARENESS OF FIRE EDUCATION (S.A.F.E.) PROGRAM
Boston – Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) announced today that several towns in his district received funding through the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E) program. The S.A.F.E. Program is a state initiative administered by the Department of Fire Services to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and more specifically the fire hazards tobacco products pose. The awards received are as follows:
- Athol received $1,912
- Brimfield received $1,492
- Brookfield received $1,492
- Charlton received $1,912
- Holland received $1,492
- Hubbardston received $1,492
- Monson received $1,912
- Orange received $2,392
- Palmer received $875.20
- Rutland received $1,912
- Sturbridge received $1,912
- Ware received $1,912
- Warren received $1,492
- West Brookfield received $1,492
“Our children are exposed to a number of fire hazards on a daily basis and this program is one of the first opportunities that students have to learn about fire safety and prevention,” stated Senator Brewer. “I applaud the hard work of our dedicated firefighters to teach children how to act in the event of an emergency.”
With the help of the S.A.F.E. Program, the State Fire Marshall has honored more than 225 children who have used the lessons they learned in school through the S.A.F.E. Program in real life emergencies. Many families claim they are alive today because their youngsters “made” them install smoke alarms and practice a home escape plan, reported an emergency, or persuaded a family member to ‘stop, drop, and roll’. It is estimated that this vital program has lead to a 66% decrease in the number of children who die in a fire each year in Massachusetts.
