Brewer Announces $50,000 for North Brookfield Town House during 200th Anniversary Celebration
(Boston) – This week, Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) joined residents of North Brookfield to celebrate the town’s 200th anniversary. During his visit, Brewer also brought news that the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund has awarded the town an emergency grant in the amount of $50,000 toward the cost of repairing the bell tower at the North Brookfield Town House.
“This funding is critical to preserving one of the great treasures of North Brookfield,” said Brewer. “As I joined residents to celebrate the bicentennial of this community, I could see the pride and honor they take in this town. I applaud the Secretary of State for recognizing this critical need and taking action to preserve the town house.”
The town house, which was constructed in 1864, was damaged during Tropical Storm Irene. The funding from the emergency grant will specifically be used for costs relating to stabilizing the base of the temporarily removed bell tower and toward efforts to secure the entire roof.
Throughout the celebration on Tuesday night, residents reflected fondly on the history of their town that touts residents who have participated in the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Shay’s Rebellion and other military engagements.
According to the Massachusetts Historical Commission the town includes 80 properties from the mid 18th century through the 20th century. Additionally the town has three National Register designations that include the Matthews Fulling Mills site, Camp Atawater on Lake Lashaway and the town house.
