Disaster Funds Announced for Hampden County

BOSTON– Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) announced today that Hampden County will now qualify for federal disaster relief funds in relation to the snowstorm that struck the Commonwealth January 11-12, 2011.

On March 7, 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved a major disaster declaration for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  This declaration makes federal funding available to state agencies, local governments and certain non-profits within the designated zone for debris removal, and emergency protective measures under the Public Assistance program and Snow Assistance, under Category B.  While Hampden County was originally excluded from the declaration as it was determined the county did not reach federal thresholds, Senator Brewer at the behest of local highway superintendents advocated for its inclusion due to near-record snowfall in the area.  Following a further review and examination of snow totals in Hampden County, it too was added to the federal declaration for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  All cities, towns, and state agencies that expended funds in Hampden County, are now eligible for reimbursement of 75% of their eligible snow removal costs arising out of the January snowstorm.

“I am pleased that Hampden County has been included in the disaster declaration for federal funds for this January blockbuster storm.  Cities and towns in Massachusetts took an inordinate hit by Mother Nature this winter so I am thrilled that some of the pain felt by the Hampden County towns will be alleviated,” said Senator Brewer.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will conduct Applicant Briefings in Hampden County in the near future to explain the reimbursement process for receiving federal funds for eligible expenses incurred by each community.
