Opacum Land Trust Celebrates First Acquisition in Holland
Captain Nehemiah May (1730 – 1793) lived in Holland, Massachusetts before the official town of Holland existed. In fact, Holland might not have become a town without Captain May; he was a signer of the petition to form the Town of Holland and also served as its first selectman in 1785. This little tidbit of history is bookmarked in time by the remains of a dam Captain May built along May Brook. Instead of being lost to history, this site has been preserved thanks to the generous donation of this property by Mr. William Hull and the Hull Forest Products Family.
“When Mr. Hull offered this land to Opacum Land Trust, I was thrilled.” said Jennifer Ohop, Opacum’s volunteer president, “As I often walk along May Brook Road I am deeply aware of the river’s beauty in all seasons. That the directors voted unanimously to accept the parcel was, well, fabulous!”
Senator Brewer and Representative Smola were in attendance, presenting the Hull Family with official Citations from the Commonwealth recognizing their commitment to sustainable forestry and conservation. “It’s all about you,” said Senator Brewer to the third generation of the Hull Family, “People protect these special places for future generations.”
